A Word of Caution About Oils

Although oils can work great to seal in moisture, it is important to not only use the right kind of oil for one’s hair, but also the right amount.  For example, with my fine, wavy, low porosity hair, grapeseed oil is a good choice.  I have a DIY oil mixture that I use a little bit of when my hair is still wet.  It is mostly made up of grapeseed oil, but also contains coconut, castor, argan, and rosemary oils.  The rosemary essential oil smells quite strong on its own, but makes the oil mixture smell quite good.  To me, it smells like homemade pizza, since my mom uses rosemary on them ^_^

Since my ends were looking quite dry yesterday, after washing my hair last night, I applied the above mention oil combination, but quite a bit more than usual.  I basically applied it all throughout my hair, keeping the first few inches of my hair at the roots without any, since I have rather oily roots and my hair tends to be flat.  Today, I had rather good curl definition and much less frizz than usual, but my hair looked incredibly stringy!

I’m not sure if the photos are capturing it, but my hair looked and felt so disgusting today that I just put it in a ponytail, braid, or bun throughout the day, depending on how frustrated I was with it.  Even after brushing it, it doesn’t look much better.

It’s been a while since I’ve used this much oil in my hair when it’s still wet, but I forgot that when I use so much oil to seal in the moisture, my hair looks the same when it’s dry as it does when it’s wet.  When you consider that my wet hair looks like overcooked noodles, it’s really not a good look.

I may need to wash my hair again tonight…
